Balance

As we start off the year, we should commit ourselves to achieving a more balanced life, i.e., a life appropriately divided between work, romance, family, friends, passions, and interests.

It seems that most people I know — regardless of age, education, income, relationship status, occupation, etc. — are in search of this balance or are stressed because they do not realize how out of balance they truly are.

I do know a select few who seem to have achieved a balance in life. They are happy and emotionally healthy (although one must constantly monitor a congenital heart condition).

I offer you a few of their unspoken — but essential – practices that seem to assist them in achieving and maintaining balance:

  1. Learn to say “no.” It’s difficult for competent, helpful women to say “no.” It’s also difficult for nice people to say “no.” If you’re constantly helping others with their relationship issues, housing situations, and projects, you just won’t have time for your own. Help people, of course — but take care of yourself and your life as well.
  2. Avoid distractions, like e-mail, instant messenger programs, your cell phone, and excessively needy acquaintances/friends. There are only so many hours in the day.
  3. Keep your living and working spaces more organized. This will reduce stress, believe me.
  4. Go for a walk every day (weather and other factors permitting). Not a competitive power walk. Not as part of a fitness regime. Go for a walk to relax, clear your head, breathe, and ground yourself.
  5. Stop procrastinating. Don’t waste time over-planning and over-thinking tasks. Just get started. Waiting for the “right” time is inefficient. Don’t employ the tactics of a whiny three-year-old: “I’ll do it later.” You won’t want to do it “later” either. Create a new mindset: do it now if possible. Or, do it as soon as possible.
  6. Seek beauty. Visit an art gallery, museum, park, or a venue wear attractive women gather. Absorb and admire this beauty.
